From 22 May, 2010 to 4 June, 2010
Mark Hammond has a distinctive style and the atmosphere he captures in his paintings is often tranquil due to the carefully selected subtle shades of paint used in watercolour, guoache or a combination of both. Mark is inspitred by the countryside, especially by the ever-changing colours of nature throughout the seasons.
Mary Harper:
From 1 May, 2010 to 21 May, 2010

'I paint places which are touched by human life, but where nature is the dominant force. Places that have a calm solitude in the vast landscape.I have always been drawn to colour,so my paintings tend to be pretty bold in the colour department, even when I try to be more subtle!

My drawings are influenced by my love of Japanese art,my black and white drawings are done freehand with pen and are intricate in pattern. They are straight from my imagination and incorporate Japanese style and detail within scenes of nature.

I studied Art and Design at Central St Martins College, followed by Theatre Design(BA hons) at Wimbledon School of Art in the early 90s.After this I gained a postgraduate diploma in Social Work at Glasgow University. I then combined skills, running art and photography groups for socially isolated and homeless young people. In 2007 I decided to focus more on my painting and now I divide my time between painting and drawing in my studio and Mugdock Makkers,an Art gallery cooperative of 30 artists which I manage part time.'

Julio Soriano-Ruiz, Lonmay
From 25 July, 2009 to 14 August, 2009
Modern abstracts: BREATHLESS
Julio Soriano-Ruiz was born in Spain in 1969. He is a virtually self-taught artist and mainly interested in working with oils, but has experimented with a number of different media over the years.
Soriano-Ruiz came to Britain in the 1990s, after a brief period living in France and he settled in London. He subsequently studied Art History at Winchester School of Art and Contemporary and Post War Art at the Sotheby’s Institute in London, obtaining an MA in this subject through Manchester University in conjunction with Sotheby’s.
These art courses help Soriano-Ruiz enormously in understanding the different trends and techniques that artists had followed over the years and he was able to draw inspiration from this.
In 1998 he spent a brief period in Ecuador studying the work of the painter Oswaldo Guayasamin, who was considered at the time the most important Latin American painter alive. He was invited by Guayasamin to stay with him at his house in Quito and was able to closely study him at work in his studio. Guayasamin had been assistant to the great Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco who, together with Siqueiros and Rivera, formed the influential school of muralism in Mexico in the 1940s-50s and was discovered by Nelson Rockefeller at the beginning of his career.
Some of Soriano-Ruiz’s work shows important similarities with Muralism but is not politically motivated. The artist is also very interested in surrealist painting, which he is currently exploring (for example the work of Wifredo Lam, the Cuban-French painter) and also the Cubism of Pablo Picasso.
This exhibition entitled “Breathless” concentrates on a departure from all these trends however and explores the world of the New Wave: simple lines, black-and-whites, zebra work, flat bright colours and the glamorous flavour of international style. The paintings are not merely superficial, but connect with much deeper and important existential subjects: the struggle of man for survival and power. This is clear in paintings like “Hiroshima” and “Jackie at the funeral”, a striking black and white portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy based on a photograph taken at her husband’s funeral. It explores glamour as a device to overcome the suffering of ordinary life.
Soriano-Ruiz has travelled extensively throughout the world and he is currently living in Aberdeenshire, where he is restoring an important country house and where he has his studio.
Philip Greene, Fife
From 4 July, 2009 to 24 July, 2009
“Prismatic Shapeism” An exciting new concept of painting on Sterling board By Philip Greene Musician, artist and poet, Philip Greene has a colourful approach to life which is vividly displayed in his exciting new concept. Soloist on the clarinet and classical saxophone, he made his home in Edinburgh from 1965 until 2000 when he moved to the East Neuk of Fife. He has pursued his painting with great vigour, leading to numerous displays at Scottish venues. A successful major exhibition “Accent on Colour” was until recently, on permanent display at the FAL Gallery in Burnley. He was winner of the Frank Martin prize for art at the Pitlochry Summer Exhibition in 2007 In January of this year his Edinburgh exhibition at the Dundas Street Gallery featured the world premiere of “Prismatic Shapeism” “Prismatic Shapeism is the style of my paintings on Sterling board (random pieces of wood of various sizes compressed into one sheet). As well as abstract paintings it is possible to be more representative with landscapes, etc, whilst keeping mainly to the confines of the given arbitrary shapes provided by the sterling board”. Philip Greene “Philip Greene’s paintings are bold, colourful and imaginative” Carol Hutchings Attic Gallery Leven. “Happy, Beautiful, expressions of humanity”. Mo Kahn FAL Gallery, Burnley

Heather Maslen
From 2 May, 2009 to 22 May, 2009
Fine Art Photography.Heather studied the art of black and white printing whilst living in Alaska and her work has been strongly influenced by the drama and beauty of it's vast wilderness. The movement of light and shadow, of lines, shape and texture, are elements she tries to capture in her images. Dispensing with the visual diversion that colour creates, she loves the way that a black and white image can expose the essence of a subject, be it a landscape, a portrait or a still life. With a background in the traditional wet darkroom she has transitioned to the use of the digital darkroom, working hard to transfer her skills whilst maintaining the integrity of the chemical process. She works with both film and digital cameras and produces all her own prints on archival paper with pigment inks. Heather has exhibited in Anchorage, Alaska and in Aberdeen and has received several awards for her work. Now back home in Scotland, she is working on a variety of projects and is available for commission. If you would like to see more of her work please visit her website at: www.heathermaslenphotography.com
